Education

My personal thoughts on Drum Education:

There are many drummers in the world and there are many drum teachers in the world as well. When it comes to education we should keep in mind three things:

  1. Being Open Minded

  2. Being Aware

  3. Being Cautious

OPEN MINDED

When it comes to who is teaching and what they're teaching, it is important to keep an open mind and respect the teacher and the material. Some might find that some teach better than others, or the material they present is more enjoyable than others, but keep in mind the end game of what you ultimately want to achieve. So even if someone says "Do this for this reason" it may in turn be beneficial towards your overall development.

AWARENESS

The opposite side to that is that if someone says "Do this for this reason, because I said so" could in turn be a hindrance towards your overall development and cause you to slide backwards in your progress. Being aware of the expectation and the limitations of the teacher and the material can also help you in the long run. But going back, keeping an open mind will let you know whether or not this is the right direction or the wrong one.

CAUTION

I say this because education should be concise and well-developed. The things a teacher should express or explain should be coherent and transparent, but if you encounter something that troubles you, the teacher should be well versed in understanding ways to help the student better learn the material and the concepts through various means, until they reach a point where the student understands. Each student is different just as each teacher is different, but the teachers need to be more adaptable to different students. Caution should be given when a teacher says there's only ONE way to do something. QUESTION THE PERSON WHO SAYS THERE'S ONLY ONE WAY! Lastly, don't be afraid to ask why.
